Primary education

Bangladesh's education system is unusually complex in that primary, middle, senior and tertiary education is general, madrash (religious) or oriented towards technical/vocational choices and even private schools and universities are heavily subsidized - indeed the constitution mandates that children under 6 and 10 pay nothing. Will not. To complicate matters further, local education is governed by a hierarchy of school boards. In the first stage, completely free primary school lasts for 5 years, usually between 6 and 10 years.

Secondary education

Students enter junior secondary school at approximately 11 years of age. This is an important phase of their young lives, because here they must make an educational choice that can irrevocably dictate their future.

Higher Secondary Education

Those who choose to complete the last 2 out of their 10 school grades in general secondary school can specify a specialization in Humanities, Science or Commerce. At the end of this they can write a Secondary School Certificate examination supervised by at least 7 school boards. Alternatively, they may elect to follow the madrasah religious education path which culminates in a different series of examinations at the same level.

Vocational education

Other students move to vocational training institutes or technical training centers run by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labor and Employment respectively. The choices here are between long-term professional certification and short-term job-specific orientation.

Tertiary education

Students of Bangladesh education who are in both courses have a choice again. This includes writing their Higher Secondary Education Certificate after another 2 years at a Technical/Poly Technical Institute where they further improve their practical skills. Alternatively, they can enter one of the many private or state-funded universities for 5 years of undergraduate study.

 llll

Dhaka University was established in 1921 as a statement of national identity. Many believe that without this Oxford of the past, the nation could not be independent and self-governing today.
